In short, you won't be able to make effective use of a dedicated renderfarm for Mantra ( maybe for third party render engines though ).Īnother limitation is the file format. The most notable is that you only get 1 mantra token per Indie licence ( versus illimited for FX and Core ), and you can only get a maximum of 3 indie licences for yourself or your own company. There are however a few limitations that mostly catter to MANTRA. With that said, Indie is basically a cheap FX licence. Meanwhile, FX is the all in one solution. Core is the low cost solution for when you don't need all the simulation capacities of Houdini : you can do modeling, animating, rendering. Think of it as a scaling of the price based on revenues. So what am I missing here? Why is the much less capable Core 5x more expensive than the Indie and why would I want to pay 11x more for the FX version? Is REALLY simply because I'm not a studio purchasing it to run a business, or is Indie lacking features I'm not seeing? Slower render times, etc?Īs mentionned, Indie is for independant, low revenue artists, while Core and FX are aimed at studios. However, renting Indie for $400 and getting most of the benefits of the FX version seems too good to be true so that sets off an alarm. I know perpetual licenses are more expensive because you're paying to own the product (as opposed to renting it). The difference between Indie and Core are substantial in that the MUCH more expensive Core version is far less capable. When I look at the features, the difference between Indie and FX are marginal (at least for my needs). $4,500 for a perpetual license for the FX version. $2,000 for a perpetual license for the Core version. ![]() I'm purchasing it for "fun" with the hopes of eventually being good enough to create a side business with it. However, the price options on SideFX's website don't make sense to me. After a couple of months with the Apprentice version, I've decided to to buy it.
